Will 2017 be the year of the tuxedo

The awards season is synonymous with red carpet glamour, with designers falling over themselves to green prom dress Hollywood's leading ladies.

But it seems change is afoot, with increasing numbers of female stars shunning fussy couture gowns for a decidedly more masculine look - and stylists are hailing it as a 'fresh' alternative to traditional dresses.

Leading the way is Evan Rachel Wood, just one of three actresses who opted for a tuxedo at last weekend's Golden Globes.

The Westworld star, 29, turned to luxury label Altuzarra after deciding to wear a 'pantsuit' for the star-studded ceremony.

'This is my third nomination and I’ve been to the Globes six times, and I’ve worn a dress every time,' she told interviewer Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

'I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure that young girls and women knew they aren’t a requirement.

'And that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to, and to just be yourself because you're worth is more than that.'

Explaining that her bespoke suit was inspired by Marlene Dietrich's iconic top hat and tails look, she also showcased her suit as a tribute to David Bowie, who died one year ago this week.

Rachel joined actresses Kathryn Hahn and Octavia Spencer in showcasing androgynous styles, but they are far from the only stars to turn to tuxes to make an impact.

Last year, Twitter was set alight after Lena Dunham wore a tuxedo to the Met Gala alongside Jenna Lyons and Jennifer Konner.

Stars including Victoria Beckham, Daokta Johnson and Jessica Alba have also jumped on board the trend in recent years - while Kourtney Kardashian has suited up not once but twice, after dressing as Jay Gatsby for her mother Kris Jenner's 60th birthday bash.

Evan Rachel Wood paired hers with a white shirt and waistcoat, with style bible Vogue praising its 'clean lines and sophisticated panache'.

While other stars have given theirs a ***y edge, wearing nothing but a bralet or vest underneath.

And celebrity stylist Lucas Armitage (@lucasmarmitage), who dresses Katie Piper and Made in Chelsea's Tiffany Watson, says it thanks to a few 'pioneering' stars that we're seeing more of them on the red carpet.

'Shunning the traditional gown feels modern, fresh and a very bold fashion step,' he tells FEMAIL.

'I have styled many of my clients in suits and the key is to get the fit right. Don't be scared to take it to your local tailor to get alterations; a high street suit can look designer if it fits like a glove.'

While designers like Stella McCartney are masters of the female tux, Lucas points to brands like Ted Baker and Reiss for more affordable high street alternatives.

Fashion expert Simon Glazin agrees. 'More and more designers are now showing trousers as part of there seasonal lineups,' he says.

'Traditionally, red carpet events are dominated by floaty gowns and second-skin dresses, but you do get the odd celebrity to break convention and go for tailoring. After all, a suit is still black tie attire!

'And you only have to look back in fashion history to see the most iconic moments are in trousers: Marlene Dietrich, that famous image of Bianca Jagger in a white trouser suit, Julie Andrews in [1982 film] Victor/Victoria in 1982.

'For me, a woman in a trouser suit is a powerful image. It's bending gender stereotypes, and the ultra masculine look, that evoke a sense of power in them.'

One style lesson every guy can learn from the best-dressed man at the Golden Globes

Ryan Gosling is now a certified leading man. And lucky for us, he's started dressing like one.

The 36-year-old "La La Land" actor has always had great style, but it's nice to see his style evolution match his professional one.

Take, for instance, his red carpet-stealing black tie at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards January 8.

The problem with wearing black tie in 2017 is that it inherently feels nostalgic and old school. Even the most connected and metropolitan men probably only wear it as many times a year as you can count on one hand.

Leaning in to the nostalgia can be tempting when black prom dresses in black tie, but it's important not to lean too far. Gosling strikes the perfect balance in his throwback ivory dinner jacket.

It's a daring one-button style that is less formal than the traditional two-button. It's paired with a matte bowtie instead of satin, and suede shoes instead of patent leather: two additional touches that take the formal factor down a notch. It all fits perfectly. This is black tie on his own terms.

He finishes it off with an atypical red boutineer.

All of these touches add up to a unique black tie tuxedo that is a nod to the rules and stated dress code, but that mixes it up in a way that is both interesting and appropriate. It shows thatGosling has a mastery of the rules, and knows how and when to break them.

He's been dressing in black tie for these award shoes long enough to know exactly what rules can be broken to augment his style while staying within bounds. It's worth noting that this isn't exclusive to black-tie black prom dresses uk.

Will following this guideline make you as stylish as Ryan Gosling? Probably not — he's had at least a decade to perfect it. But it can't hurt to start now.

slimmer Emma Bleakley ditches size 30 dresses

And now at 13st 7lb she’s no longer shopping for shapeless size 30 outfits after fitting into a 10 for the first time.

Emma, 23, said: “The change has been amazing, I don’t recognise myself sometimes.

2016 Classy Long Watermelon/White Tailor Made Evening Prom Dresses (LFNDB0014)

“I was shopping the other day and saw a one shoulder prom dresses I liked but they only had a size 10.

“I decided to try it on anyway and I couldn’t believe it fitted me — I was dancing in the changing room.”

Emma, of Elgin, used to scoff burgers, takeaways, fizzy drinks and crisps. Her high calorie diet meant she was “mortified” aged 17 when she couldn’t fit on a theme park ride.

But now she makes healthy home-cooked meals and her favourite treats are low-fat yoghurt and fruit. She said: “I feel brilliant — I’ve lost the equivalent of a whole person.

“I’ve got so much more energy when I’m out walking my dogs.

“I’ve been overweight since a child, so it was the result of a lifetime of bad eating habits.”

Emma, a class manager at Scottish Slimmers who started her healthy eating plan two years ago, added: “I don’t see it as a diet — it’s a complete lifestyle change.”

The Bridesmaids dresses

At most weddings, friends and sisters/brothers of the bride and groom are among those people who get to have the most fun, as well as bring all the events together with engaging with the guests. One major aspect of having fun at such events, particularly for many girls, is going all out with MarieProm Prom Dresses up, a chance we seldom get due to the requirement of being sober as adults! So the weddings in the close family or friend circle seems like the best time to bring out the glam and the loud and shiny at the same time, and sneakily or not so sneakily, twirl around mesmerised by our own flowing dresses. However, try not to steal the limelight from the bride or the groom by going overboard.

Overtime, the simplicity of weddings in the days when we just wore whatever the best we had are long gone, and not always lamentably. It is often quite adorable to see a small army of bridesmaids and groomsmen being the life of a party in coordinated outfits. It is more common to see elaborate planning in the dresses of the bridesmaids and their troupe.

But that being said, there are some things everyone has to keep in mind, a short list of which follows, along with some do nots, and a few dos, for you to get inspiration from this wedding season.

One does not have to dress any certain way to look chic, as it is all about appropriate styling and how you carry yourself. Some bridesmaids appear fully decked in heavy and statement pieces, beautiful taant saris, looking every part the bridesmaid, but can in no way be confused as the bride. Chunky but classy jewellery pieces, both in bronze and silver, are not traditional bridal-wear, and the flowers around the hair-buns only add an extra festive touch, when not clashing with the other elements.

For the Holud or Mehendi functions, a way to stand out with subtlety is to use various draping styles, along with understated jewellery and letting your lush hair loose, like the quintessential Bengali belle.

If you are blessed with a head full of long hair, an intricately woven braid, with or without flowers, might turn out to be your best accessory. The choice of colours can be your own, or on theme as decided by the bride and groom.

Delicate armbands or even temporary tattoos with henna and chandan look very chic, especially with the 'ek-pech' (single-drape) sari. So do the various unconventional jewellery items like lace, beads and shola (Indian cork). You can also experiment with the placement and folds of the 'kuchi' (central pleats). If you happen to be married, do not hesitate to bring out the treasured 'tikli', but then leave out the necklace perhaps, to keep the look balanced.

Unmarried women can also wear head and hair accessories, as long as these are age appropriate and not overshadowing the bride's own getup.

For the more formal occasions, when cottons are replaced by our silk and brocade favourites, be careful to pick colours which do not risk overwhelming the bride's own outfit. This does not mean you have to be dull or boring, as there is no dearth of classy and bright colours to choose from, in all shades from reds, blues, pinks to even earthy tones.

Katan and Benarasi happen to be all time favourites, and are available in hundreds of hues and styles. These can be paired with matching or contrast blouses, which is another area to express your creativity in.

The blouse's neckline, hem, back, sleeves, texture of the fabric and the colour itself are all open to experimentation, and can change the look of the same sari many times over!

As a good bridesmaid, you should be positive to the bride/groom's ideas about what you should wear, be an enthusiastic part of their vision for the celebrations, propose your own ideas and suggestions, and of course make time to accompany them for the endless shopping and planning trips if asked. However, you can still have oodles of fun in just evening dresses up, with good planning.

PETER DUNDAS ON DESIGNING CIARA’S ONE-OF-A-KIND WEDDING DRESS

March, Roberto Cavalli designer Peter Dundas received a call from Ciara, a close friend and face of the brand. She was getting married to her fiancé, the football player Russell Wilson, and wanted Dundas would design the prom dresses uk—in less than four months. While most designers would balk at such a challenge, Dundas was delighted. “I think its good to have a healthy pressure time wise,” the designer said, on the phone from Milan, where he is currently designing his Spring 2017 collection. “You stick more to your original idea, which I always think tends to be the best one.”

UK Short Pink Tailor Made Cocktail Prom Dress(BNNAH0118)

After four fittings that took place in three countries, he got the job done, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson walked down the aisle on July 6th at a ceremony in an English castle. Here, Dundas describes how he created Ciara’s spectacular gown, why he loves when brides wear sleeves, and more.

What was the inspiration for Ciara’s wedding dress?

She told me wanted to get married in a castle, and that she and Russell were planning a fairytale wedding. That played a lot into the kind of shape we were worked on. She wanted to enjoy wearing the dress as much as possible, so I made it into something that transformed--there was a dress base and then there was a half s******t that went on top of it that we took off after the ceremony so she could move and dance. She looked a little bit like a Velasquez painting, so she just wore a simple cross to go with it.

Ciara didn’t want it to be too va va va voom. It was heavily, heavily embellished with embroidery, appliques, beads, layers of tulle… I mixed Italian baroque patterns with like flying birds, butterflies, French wheat patterns [a symbol of good luck], and their initials on the back. And it had sleeves. I like sleeves in general, and put them on a lot of my prom dresses online. You don’t always want to have your arms on show, and when you cover them with sleeves, it's a nice way to allow you to focus more on the neck, the bust, and things like that. But Ciara’s also somebody who absolutely has a very strong faith, so it was a religious wedding and she wanted something that was appropriate for that.

New style: She's known for her long and luxurious hair but on Monday Mila Kunis pinned her hair back to create the illusion of a short bob at the premiere of her latest movie in New York City

The 32-year-old actress looked sassy with her new short wavy hairstyle while attending the Bad Moms premiere at the Metrograph in Manhattan.

The pregnant mother of one also showed her chic maternity style in a black one-piece pantsuit.

The outfit featured a deep neckline with tassels and embroidered trim along the collar and short sleeves.

Mila polished off her outfit with a pair of pink heels.

The Jupiter Ascending star accentuated her green eyes with blue eyeshadow and accessorised with colourful beaded bracelets.

She teamed up on the carpet with actresses Annie Mumolo, 43, and Kathryn Hahn, 42, who also have featured roles in the R-rated comedy.

Mila stars along with Kristen Bell, 36, and Kathryn Hahn, 42, in the upcoming film directed and written by The Hangover writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.

She plays overworked supermom Amy Mitchell who teams up with two other stressed out mothers on a quest to free themselves from conventional responsibilities.

The film also starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate opens on July 29.

The New York City premiere drew a slew of local celebrities including former Jersey Shore star Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi who showed some leg in a grey and black outfit.

Martha Stewart and Sandra Bernhard both also were in attendance and wore similar white trousers.

Colby Minifie, 23, who shined in her supporting role as Robyn in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Jessica Jones added some colour to the premier in a short-sleeved orange prom dresses.

Fashion designers also hit up the premiere with Nicole Miller and Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia arriving in style.

Mila and husband Ashton Kutcher, 38, confirmed last month that they were expecting their second child together.

The Hollywood couple married in July 2015 after welcoming daughter Wyatt in October 2014.

Get the look! Ex On The Beach's Lacey Fuller dresses up in £30 lace co-ords

Yesterday, the style-savvy reality star took to Instagram to give us a glimpse of her OOTD (outfit of the day, duh!) and we fell head over heels for her racy lacy (sorry) co-ordinates that boasted a halter-neck bralet and matching high-waisted trousers with killer flares.

2016 Pretty Long Black Tailor Made Evening Prom Dresses (LFNDB0009)

photos:prom dresses london

That's right! This time, it wasn't Lacey's sharp contour, perfectly tousled hair, or ultra-shimmery highlight that caught our attention from the get-go (although, can we please just appreciate?) but her eye-popping all-white ensemble and thankfully, she took to the caption to give us the lowdown!

Lacey, who usually raids Pretty Little Thing, Missguided and Boohoo for the majority of her gorgeous getups, revealed that she looked to online fashion boutique Oh Polly instead. But the best part is that the entire look won't break the bank at £30.

Yep - just thirty quid - hurrah!

Lacey teamed her two-piece with a pair of sky-high stone coloured wedges and she pulled it all together with a pillar box red lip and lashings of bronzer.

Now if you'll excuse us, we have virtual shopping basket to fill...

The best fashion ramp is the street: Top Indian street blogs to follow

The best fashion show is definitely on the street. Always has been, and always will be,” the godfather of street-style photography Bill Cunningham had once remarked. The 87-year-old veteran breathed his last on June 25. He not only left behind his work, some framed, some published, but also a legacy for all those who consider ordinary people their muses. He inspired hundreds to find fashion in the most unlikely places, away from the glitzy world around the ramp.

Read: 12 gorgeous American street style looks you’ll want to copy now

Even closer home, his influence has been extensive. “I religiously followed Bill Cunningham’s column on street style in The New York Times. That’s what inspired me to give street-style photography a try. After doing it for three years, I finally got my big break this year. I did a street-style photo story for a luxury magazine. I also got an opportunity to document the street fashion of India for a magazine in London, UK, and one in Milan, Italy,” says Abhimanyu Singh Rathore, who runs a street-style blog called Ishtailista.

Gradual growth

Internationally, street-style photography, which includes documenting trends sported by ordinary people on the street, has many takers. American blogger Scott Schuman’s blog, The Sartorialist, and Canadian photographer Tommy Ton’s blog, Jak&Jil, have many hooked. French-American fashion photographer David Luraschi’s signature ‘peep style’ includes capturing candid pictures of people from behind.

Over the years, street-style photography has picked up in India too. Today, you can find ample preening trendsetters getting clicked by photographers outside fashion week venues. “I had always been into candid portrait and street-style photography, and there was a gap in the Indian market for this kind of work,” says Samir Rana of Stylespy.in, who now feels that things have been experiencing a shake-up in this area.

Samir Rana, who runs stylespy.in, says some of his most popular photos have been of ladies in saris. (stylespy.in)

Manou of Wearabout, one of the most popular street-style blogs in India, echoes a similar stance. He says the documentation of street-style has evolved in India over the years, but there’s still a long way to go. “It had definitely evolved, but not in the ways I would have liked it to. Having original content, which includes the subject one chooses to photograph, maintaining the uniqueness of the style of photography and being consistent are all key factors. A lot of people go unnoticed because they take similar photos in a similar style. They also do it not out of real interest, but either because they are hired to do so by magazines or brands, or because they think it is the ‘in thing’ to do,” says Manou. He started taking photos on the streets several years ago, when he was living in McLeodganj, Himachal Pradesh. He was also inspired by the Japanese street fashion book, FRUiTS, by Shoichi Aoki.

Inspiration needed

While Milan, London and New York (USA) are considered the hubs of fashion, and these cities are full of inspiration, Rana feels India is still not there, which, at times, can become a restriction for the photographers here. “The average person on the street in India is still not as well-graduation dresses as compared to those in other cities around the world. But with global brands making international styles more accessible and affordable in India, this is slowly changing,” he says.

The challenges don’t stop there. Asking strangers to pose on the road isn’t a cakewalk either. Rathore says street-style photography can be risky at times, as people get conscious if someone captures them without their consent. “There are times when people get furious if I photograph them. Some have also abused me for the same,” he says, adding that the best solution in such a situation is to delete the picture right away. “A photographer should confess that he/she has taken a picture, and can delete it if they want. Doing street-style photography is no less than an adventure,” he says.

Indian street-style photographer, Abhimanyu Singh Rathore says he religiously followed Bill Cunningham’s column on street style in The New York Times. (ishtailista.wordpress.com)

Style inspiration

Several times, street style has also inspired designers to create collections. Sana and Sulakshana of the label The Circus say street style has become popular because it reflects a sense of ease and quirkiness, while keeping fashionable trends in mind. “Street style stands for the freedom of imagination. It lets the wearer bend the rules of fashion and create his/her own style statement, which was what we had in mind when we made our first line, The Paradox, which was inspired by it,” says Sana.

Shoe designer Laksheeta Govil of Fizzy Goblet often uses street style as an inspiration for her collections. “We are looking for individuality. What we wear is a perfect conduit for that. Also, street style has become accessible due to platforms like Instagram,” she adds.

All the fashion from 2016 Durban July

Despite the moody and cloudy Durban weather, Matheba was a ray of sunshine in a cleavage-baring and figure-hugging short prom dresses made by her go-to fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee.

Rocking curly hair and Christian Louboutin shoes, the floral off-the-shoulder dress with a peplum hemline was a feast for the eyes for fashion lovers.

Image Title

Another favourite was Generations: The Legacy actress Chiedza Mhende, who on-screen plays male character Wandile. Mhende had a princess moment with an African print and tulle ballgown designed by Amther Line, complete with matching doek.

The actress, who flaunted her ample cleavage, added some boyish charm with Converse All Star sneakers.

It was Mhende's first Vodacom Durban July and she said she was loving it, especially with how fans have responded to her TV character

"The look is inspired by just being emotionally free and true to myself. The theme is Leader of the Pack. And I'm leading with my Converse sneakers. I feel comfortable and I look great. Celebrating the young African lady in me," Mhende explained.

Other stars spotted at the Durban July included Isidingo actress Noluthando Meje, another Generations actress Andisiwe Dweba as well as Muvhango actor Macdonald Ndou.

Stoan Seate, singer and actress Thembi Seete as well as sports presenter Thomas Mlambo with songbird Bucie on his arm were also there galloping around the VIP area.

President Jacob Zuma was said to have attend but had not made an appearance in the early afternoon.

Julius Malema traded in his overalls and red beret for a dashing suit, and his wife Mantwa Matlala matched his swag.

Johanna Johnson dresses auctioned for a fraction of their RRP to pay creditors

Embattled bridal gown designer Johanna Johnson is holding a fire sale of evening dresses at bargain prices in an attempt to pay some of her creditors.

The sale, on popular auction site Grays Online, features evening prom dresses 2016 that would have sold for thousands of dollars priced from just $100, as well as "bundle lots" of wedding gowns and other clothing.

Johnson, whose designs were red carpet favourites of Hollywood starlets and Australia's own Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, had her business placed into liquidation in April after running up debts of more than $1 million.

Creditors include the Australian Tax Office and former employees, who are owed entitlements and superannuation.

Liquidator Tim Cook, of Balance Insolvency, said the sales had been broken into lots and some had performed above expectations.

He said as most of the stock for sale was samples, it was hard to determine its value.

"The best way to figure out what we can get for this stuff is to put it on an online auction and let the market determine what it's worth," he told Fairfax Media.

"The suggested value I got was very low to the point that it was perhaps not worth running the auction. The results have been better than that."

Previous sales have included equipment and unfinished garments and accessories. He said there were about 90 lots for sale in total, with about 30-40 remaining.

He said about 50 brides whose gowns were unfinished when the business collapsed had received refunds as they had paid by credit card.

But that hasn't stopped many angry brides taking to the brand's Facebook page to express their anger.

On May 11, one bride wrote that she was disappointed with the service she had received from the company.

"Your brides don't just pay for a dress, they pay for service and a wonderful experience. I received my dress in November, however I basically had to harass your staff about fittings, I wasn't advised of your change in location and suddenly I found myself being shuffled about locations in a hot, gross warehouse trying my dress which was a far cry from the glamour of your Queen Street store. I think you need to own your actions, pay your staff and honestly speak with your brides," she wrote.

Despite the state of affairs, the company has continued to post photos of happy brides in its dresses on social media.

Mr Cook said to date there had been no offers to buy the ailing business, so it was necessary to liquidate the assets.

He said funds recovered would first go towards paying staff entitlements and superannuation.

Grays Online and Johanna Johnson have been contacted for comment.
